Deliver a memorable Father of the bride speech

Weddings are very emotional affairs. One of the most emotional aspects of the wedding reception is the father of the bride speech.

The father of the bride in his speech not only has to express love and pride in his daughter but he also has to welcome the groom into his family.

Of course, father of the bride speeches may also take on other roles. The exact content of the speeches and the related toasts will vary according to the wedding and the other speakers at that wedding.

There are many ideas to make the father of the bride speech excellent and I will cover just a few of them here.

By the way, it’s not just the content of the speech that matters but also how the father of the bride delivers his speech. We cover many tips in our e-book: The beginner's guide to being a brilliant MC; that can help the father of the bride deliver his speech in an engaging and positive way. We also have a sample father of the bride speech in the book.

Father of the bride speeches: Jokes are not vital

My first tip for father of the bride speeches is to let you know that you do not have to tell jokes.

So often the father of the bride, the best man and the wedding MC automatically think that their role is to tell jokes. It is certainly far more likely that the men at the wedding will tell jokes than the women, however this still does not make it necessary to tell wedding jokes.

I am certainly not suggesting that you don't have humour in the father of the bride speech, far from it. What I am advocating is that you find this humour in a way other than jokes.

Wedding jokes can be risky. The problem with them is that they can offend certain guests if they are not chosen wisely. Wedding jokes also run the risk of having been heard before and may therefore fall flat. The father of the bride will not want to look out on a sea of guests staring blankly back at him when he thought he was going to be funny.

My first father of the bride speech tip then is very simple. Find ways to add humour to your speech other than jokes. Personal stories can be far more successful and make a wedding far more intimate.

Father of the bride speeches: Know the aim

In your father of the bride speech do not just ramble on with irrelevant stories or take too long to get the point. Instead make sure that what you say achieves your aim.

Before you even start writing your speech decide what you want to achieve. What is the purpose of your particular father of the bride speech as opposed to all the other father of the bride speeches that are around?

Each speech is an opportunity for the father to give a unique perspective on the bride and groom, to give a unique insight into the bride, and to express the love that the father has for his daughter.

This means that how you speak and what you say needs to echo your personal values and feelings, and not those of others.

This second father of the bride speeches tip is easy. You need to know the aim of your speech and to make sure that what you say achieves this aim. Without a clear aim you could end up going off on tangents and boring your wedding guests and the bridal party.

Father of the bride speeches: Express your pride and love

Surely the most important part of any father of the bride speech is what the father says about his daughter and her new husband.

There are father of the bride speeches that fail to deliver a positive message about the bride. Instead, they get bogged down in rambling irrelevancies and anecdotes. They tell many stories about the bride when she was a child or what she did growing up but without any real purpose or feeling.

Your father of the bride speech needs to express your pride in your daughter on her wedding day. It is an emotional time for a father to "give away" his daughter to another man. He needs to be seen to be doing this with love and to be proud of his daughter's choice of husband.

How you express your pride and love for your daughter is your own personal journey. It is pointless to provide you with my words, they need to be your own. It is your own words that really matter.

You also, on the day, need to speak from your heart. Don't take anybody else's script for your father of the bride speech, speak from your heart and express your love for your daughter and wish her and her new husband great happiness.

The third tip for father of the bride speeches is again very clear and yet so many father of the bride speeches fail to accomplish it. Make sure it is full of love for your daughter and pride in her, her husband and their marriage.
